Hiking

To find a hike, use the Hike Finder tool on the right.

Day Hikes are just that- a hike that a newbie can complete during a single day. Most of the trails we cover here are loops, or circuits. This enables you to finish your hike where you started.

Backpacking is any hike that can take longer than 8 hours, often leading you into an overnight excursion. Backpackers generally spend more than a single day out on the trail. These trails may be a closed circuit, or may leave you hundreds of miles from where you began.

Last Week: Hiking the Chattooga River, SC

East Fork Trail, Sumter National Forest, SC

It wasn’t long ago that I’d skimmed through a magazine on the shelves of Barnes & Noble, and gleamed this nugget of information: Deliverance was filmed on the Chattooga River between South Carolina and Georgia. So only fate can account for it showing on some random cable channel when I’ve got a flight booked to head down there this weekend. I’d been locked in a weeklong debate regarding where to spend this much needed weekend in the woods, and that settled it- Chattooga here I come.
